Health Tip: All about sunscreen
With summer just around the corner, many of us can’t wait to get on the beach, and we’ve all heard how important it is to lather up in sunscreen before we soak up some rays. But with so many sunscreen options out there, it’s hard to decide which one to buy.
So why is wearing sunscreen such a big deal? Wearing sunscreen whenever you’re spending time outdoors is extremely important because it reduces your risk of skin cancer, prevents sunburn and helps prevent early signs of aging.
To get the best possible protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which cause skin cancer, the sunscreen label should include:
- Broad Spectrum
- SPF 30 or higher
- Water resistant or very water resistant (for up to 40 to 80 minutes)
Spray sunscreen can be just as effective as lotion varieties if they meet these requirements, but some experts have cautioned against using spray sunscreen with children due to the risk of inhaling toxins that may harm the lungs.
When applying sunscreen, you need about one ounce to cover the exposed parts of your body.
